Bitterley cold day – but the couple were brilliant

Just about the coldest day ever for a wedding pre-shoot

The Groom (who is a long standing friend)  has suffered a pretty serious back problem in the run up to the wedding and this resulted in having only one date mutually available.  We arranged to meet at a local park, where I’ve completed a number of pre-shoots previously. During the week before our planned meeting, the weather took an un-expected turn and temperatures just plummeted and we had a pretty good covering of snow for good measure too!!!

Given we had only one day available before the actual wedding day, it was going to take more than a little snow to stop this shoot going ahead, although I was really concerned the couple might call it off at the last minute as despite the biting cold, the roads conditions were pretty “hairy” too and given this was a rural location pulling into the car park I really expected to get a call!!!

Camera lenses misting – were the least of the problems

Once out of the car, the real temperature became apparent very quickly, not only was the temperature -5 but the stiff wind made it feel much worse. Although Helene (The Bride) was quite relaxed, Chris (the Groom) was really worried he’d slip on the frozen, snow covered ground and jaundice the wedding day at Friren Manor Hotel. We decided that avoiding the rather steep and ice covered slopes would be best and remained local on the flat ground nearest the car park. Although I had the camera kit in the car boot, the temperature was causing a constant problem as the lenses of both the Canon 5D’s were fogging (at least to start with) and this resulted in constant clearing.

The shoot was as I expected – really easy, with a couple as willing, fun loving and relaxed it was easy to get some great shots and cover a great deal of things we would be doing on the actual Wedding Day! So, although Chris was a little “contained” with his concerns over his back injury we had 40 minutes of laughter and fun and decided to hear for the coffee shop to discuss the final details.

Planning and understanding the finer details

As I re-confirm to very couple there is no “right or wrong wedding” and what one couple see as fantastic and a “must have” will not be as important or to the taste of another. At Studio1 Photography getting to understand the specific details after the pre-shoot is critical, as at this stage the planning is pretty much complete and the couple have a really clear idea of how and what they want on the actual day. It’s our job to pick out the important parts and make sure we are aware of what’s essential on the wedding day!!

Wedding Day Pre-shoot with a great couple…..

An early start…..

We met at a local park, where there is masses of photo opportunity, lakes, bridges, funky seats and shaded pathways too. Because the park offers so much, has great parking and a pretty good café too it gets very, very busy and in order to make the best of the shoot we had to start pretty early.

The couple (Susan & Donald) were already waiting when I arrived, so within minutes of my arrival we were off and looking for the best and first location to start the day.

Part of the pre-shoot for me is to get to know the couple better, really get a good understanding of what they want, and what they don’t like too of course. No two couples are the same and experience has taught me presumption is a very dangerous thing. I am always quick to confirm “there is no right or wrong wedding” It’s your wedding day so have it your way.

How long before the special day………

Generally, I try to arrange the pre-shoot around four weeks before the wedding day. The main reason for this is so that the couple still feel comfortable with me on the actual day, they’ll have remembered most of what we spoke about, some of the poses, some of the shots we’ll have practiced and most importantly they will have confidence knowing I’m not going to be asking them to dangle upside down from a tree, stand barefoot in a lake or balance on tea creates (unless they want to of course!!) Giving couples confidence to trust me means they relax, have fun and really enjoy the day – that means fantastic wedding photos full of emotion, fun, smiles and a few tears (of joy) too.

Susan & Donald have chosen Le Talbooth, Dedham as their venue. This is a beautiful, quality venue with amazing photographic opportunity, could say a photographers dream!!

What happens after the shoot……

After the shoot, we wander over to the café and providing the weather is good, sit outside and discuss the details and timings of the wedding. The timing is really important for me as I need to plan what time I’ll need to be at certain locations throughout the day. This also gives the couple a chance to ask me about the logistics and invariably the equipment I’ll be taking too. (having seen some of the kit during the preshoot we have just completed)

During this “coffee break” I show the couple a variation of different printed pictures, shots, poses and styles and gauge their reaction to get a deeper understanding of what they like, it’s always the non-verbal reaction that tells the story!!!

I always make lots of notes during these meetings, and record the critical timings too. A couple of days after the meeting / preshoot, I build a time planner and send it over to the couple, I’m regularly advised this planner is used to co-ordinate all the other suppliers and sometimes the wedding co-coordinator too. Thinking about it, it’s only the photographer that’s involved with the whole day as much as the coupe themselves!!

A photographers view of your wedding day…

During the week before the wedding, I always drive the route the day will take me, making sure I’m aware of any parking or road work issues. I visit the venue and speak to the staff, walking around to find the very best light and locations at the venue means I’m as prepared as I can be on the day and there are no surprises, I know where to get the best shots before I get there.

The day before the wedding, all the batteries and the portable lights are charged, cameras are time sync’d and memory cards checked and formatted (each camera has two cards – so not unusual to carry 10 cards as I expect to take between 1500 and 2000 shots!!)

It’s always an early start on the wedding day and generally get to the Groom around first to get fun shots, details and some a little more formal. From there it’s on to the Bride & the girls to capture some of the happiest and most emotional times of the day!!

The Kit

During the ceremony, I carry two professional Canon cameras both with “L” series lenses (one long lens and one wide) and have a third set up (if possible and I do not have a second photographer shooting with me) on a remote, tripod mounted to shoot as though I do have a second photographer with me, to get maximum coverage.

After the ceremony things get really hectic and apart from the group shots, I’m as busy as I can be getting shots of family and friends laughing and having fun (when they are not aware they are being photographed) most of my couples just love these shots!! During this time, I try to get the couple for a couple of minutes just to get some special shots, whilst their family and friends are preoccupied and never miss them.

A thank you for letting me be part of your day

For bookings confirmed before the end of 2017 I am including a special surprise for my couples and its delivered on the evening of the wedding – it generally has everyone laughing or crying tears of happiness at various times and it’s a memory to keep forever too!!!
